The Bureau of Indian Affairs approved a land-into-trust application for the Suquamish Tribe of Washington. The seven acres is part of the Suquamish Clearwater Casino Resort. The land, however, won't be used for gaming activities, and the casino portion of the facility is already in trust. “We’re really happy about that,” Chairman Leonard Forsman told The Kitsap Sun. “It’s righting a wrong, little by little.” The tribe bought the seven acres about six years ago, the paper said. The land is within the original boundaries of the Port Madison Reservation. Get the Story:

The Suquamish people have lived along the shores of the Kitsap Peninsula for hundreds of years. Taking their name from the word for “clear salt water,” Suquamish ancestors thrived by harvesting salmon, clams and other natural foods. Their robust culture is rich with art, dance, song, ceremony, contest and ritual.

In 1987, the Suquamish Tribe established Port Madison Enterprises as an agency of the Suquamish tribal government. PME’s operations are aimed at developing community resources while promoting the economic and social welfare of the Suquamish Tribe through commercial activities. What began as a modest retail endeavor has grown exponentially over the last quarter century. PME now encompasses several businesses including Suquamish Clearwater Casino Resort, the historic Kiana Lodge, three retail outlets, White Horse Golf Course and a property management division. Operations of PME are conducted at the direction of a Board of Directors comprised of seven tribal members who are appointed by the Suquamish Tribal Council. The Board has the power and responsibility to establish employment policies for PME and all of its ventures and subsidiaries. With more than 1000 employees in field ranging from information technology to hospitality to construction, the Suquamish-owned company and its subsidiaries are now the second-largest private employer in the greater Kitsap area.
